The story
The Taiwan PASS HSR version’s seven-day usage window starts when a transport product is first redeemed or used, counting that first day. Buying the package or activating it in the app alone is not described as starting that window. The sequence matters, however: the official FAQ gives different instructions for starting with MRT or shuttle redemption and starting with an online HSR reservation. Taiwan PASS FAQ
This practical explainer uses official terms checked 20 October 2026. It covers the HSR version for short-term international visitors, rather than a newly announced change. Travelers entering on a Taiwan passport and holders of a valid residence permit are ineligible. Eligibility
Keep the four clocks separate
Purchase starts the activation allowance: the FAQ says to activate the package within 365 days after purchase. That does not mean every included ticket remains usable for 365 days after your first journey. Activation and transport use have separate conditions. Activation terms
An issued HSR redemption code has another deadline. The FAQ says it must be redeemed at an HSR counter within 89 days, counted from the day after issuance. Collect the physical HSR ticket with the app code and valid entry documents. Treat this as a code-collection condition, not an extension of the package’s travel window. HSR collection instructions
The seven-day package window includes its first day; the FAQ does not establish an exact 168-hour allowance. Separately, the included HSR product covers three consecutive days. A seven-day package window therefore does not provide seven days of HSR travel. Package FAQ and THSR pass terms
Choose your redemption sequence deliberately
If you redeem an MRT or scenic-shuttle item first, the Taiwan PASS FAQ generally requires redemption of the HSR and remaining items within seven days. Before making that first redemption, check that your planned rail and local transport dates fit together. MRT and shuttle redemption methods vary by selected product. Sequence and redemption guidance
If you first use the HSR code to make an online reservation, the FAQ instead gives a 30-day redemption window for the other transport items. Once transport is used, remaining items must still be used within seven days. That reservation-first scenario gives planning flexibility; it does not turn the package into 30 days of transport use. Keep the separate 89-day HSR-code collection deadline in view as well. HSR-first scenario

Check seats separately from pass validity
A valid pass does not guarantee a reserved seat. THSR describes standard-class reserved or non-reserved travel, excludes business class and warns that seats depend on availability. Its pass instructions require reservations before boarding. THSR pass conditions
The Taiwan PASS FAQ and THSR’s general pass page give different reservation cutoffs. The applicable cutoff for this bundled product remains unresolved in the checked guidance as of October 20, 2026. Follow the current instructions for your booking route and confirm the requirement before relying on a departure; neither package activation nor ticket collection resolves that question. Decide whether the extras fit your trip
The adult HSR package costs NT$2,800 and includes a three-day HSR pass, one of four MRT options and one of 15 scenic-shuttle options. Those are choices within the bundle, not access to every listed option. Tourism Administration product information
The separate adult THSR three-day pass costs NT$2,200, making the package price difference NT$600. That difference is not proof of savings: the bundle’s value depends on using the selected MRT and scenic-shuttle options within the applicable windows. Compare those options with your actual itinerary before purchase, then check their redemption instructions. Listed choices do not establish live availability through every seller.
