The story
The Airport Express is worth the extra HK$78.10 when its 24-minute ride to Hong Kong Station fits your onward journey. A11 deserves a closer look when saving money or reaching a stop nearer your Hong Kong Island hotel matters more. The premium buys a defined station-to-station train journey; its value depends on where you need to go next.
What the extra HK$78.10 buys
Official figures checked on 22 October 2026 put the adult Airport Express fare between the airport and Hong Kong Station at HK$120 with Octopus, a contactless bank card or QR code. Adults are aged 12 or above. A Smart Ticket costs HK$130, so the payment method changes this comparison. See MTR’s fare table.
The Transport Department lists the A11 airport route’s full fare at HK$41.90. Subtracting that from the HK$120 train fare gives HK$78.10 per adult, one way. This comparison concerns Hong Kong Station and A11 specifically; it is not a fare comparison for every Cityflyer route. See the official A-route table.
MTR lists 24 minutes between the airport and Hong Kong Station. That is not your airport-to-hotel time: reaching the train and continuing from the station remain part of the journey. The checked sources do not establish a guaranteed A11 journey time to Central, so they cannot support an exact number of minutes saved. Check MTR’s timetable.
Choose the arrival point before the vehicle
A11 serves Sheung Wan, Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and North Point, with North Point Ferry Pier as its terminus. For some hotels, a closer bus stop may be more useful than arriving at Hong Kong Station. Compare your final address with the route and the onward transfer from the train before paying the premium. The Citybus route information is the starting point for that check.

A return trip changes the calculation
MTR lists the same adult fare for a single journey and an eligible same-day return to or from Hong Kong Station. Eligibility depends on using the same payment method and meeting its transaction conditions. For a return on a separate day, do not assume that same-day arrangement applies; MTR also lists a HK$215 Smart Ticket round trip. Check the applicable product in MTR’s fare rules.
Citybus lists an A11 adult discounted return fare of HK$21.00 for eligible same-day travel. It requires the same Octopus or e-payment account, no more than nine taps between trips, and eligible boarding stops. An eligible HK$41.90 outward trip plus that discounted return totals HK$62.90. This is conditional, not an automatic discount for every passenger or payment method. Read the Cityflyer same-day return terms.
Check the service window for late arrivals
MTR lists the first airport-to-city train at 05:54 and the last at 00:48, with schedules subject to change. If you arrive after the last train, Citybus lists N11 as a separate overnight option serving Central. A11 should not be treated as that overnight service; check the current N11 schedule through Citybus before relying on it.
Choose the train when Hong Kong Station is a useful arrival point and the defined rail journey justifies the fare. Choose A11 when its stop coverage and lower fare fit your address and plans. Neither price alone nor the train’s 24-minute figure settles the whole transfer.
