The story

An overseas visitor can still plan the Ghibli Museum as a Tokyo side trip in November 2026, but the reservation must come first. Admission requires advance booking, and tickets are not sold at the museum. November tickets were released on 10 October; remaining availability was not verified. The new QR-ticket system adds a separate JPY 110 system-use fee per ticket for November admission. Start with the museum’s official ticket guidance before fixing the rest of the day.

Separate admission prices from the new fee

The museum lists base admission at JPY 1,000 for visitors aged 19 and over, JPY 700 for ages 13–18, JPY 400 for ages 7–12 and JPY 100 for ages 4–6. Its ticket-change notice adds the JPY 110 system-use fee per ticket for November 2026 admission. This is a separate charge, rather than a replacement for the published admission-price bands.

The regular release is on the 10th of each month for the following month. The Lawson ticket page confirms the November release date, but a release announcement does not establish whether tickets remain. Check the applicable booking route before committing to a particular museum day.

Check the purchase route before relying on your phone

The museum’s English guidance covers Lawson and JTB purchase routes. Separately, the Japanese Lawson page says its November electronic tickets use MOALA and describes requirements for an internet-connected smartphone and SMS authentication. The museum notice describes electronic and paper options.

Those domestic instructions do not establish that every overseas buyer needs a Japanese phone number. Follow the conditions of the route you actually use, including how you receive and display the ticket. A QR code does not remove the need to confirm that your device and authentication arrangements work for that purchase flow.

Lawson also says the buyer’s account name appears on tickets, identity checks may occur and attendees must enter together. Changes and refunds are not allowed. For a group, the practical trade-off is flexibility: coordinate the named booking and arrival plan before purchase rather than treating each ticket as an independently movable slot.

Leave room for the approach and the visit

The museum’s directions put JR Mitaka Station approximately 20 minutes from Shinjuku by the JR Chuo Line, followed by about a 15-minute walk. A community bus runs about every 15 minutes during opening hours; the listed adult fare is JPY 230. Walking avoids that fare, while the bus offers an alternative to the walk. Neither estimate should be treated as your complete door-to-door journey.

Tickets reserve a date and entry time. The entry conditions allow entry within one hour of the specified time, and visitors may stay until closing rather than following a fixed exit slot. Published opening hours are 10:00–18:00. An earlier reservation therefore leaves more potential visiting time, but the usable choice depends on the tickets you can actually book.

Choose dates carefully if the short film matters

The official film schedule lists The Whale Hunt through 3 November and Treasure Hunting from 19 November to 26 December 2026. Both schedules are tentative. No film listing appeared for 4–18 November on the checked schedule; that gap is not confirmation of closure or cancellation. The Saturn Theater has about 80 seats, and admission is limited to one screening per visit.

The Yuriko Yamawaki exhibition began on 19 November 2025 and is tentatively scheduled through May 2027. It is not a new November 2026 opening. If a particular short film is the reason for your trip, recheck its dates before booking. If your aim is the broader museum visit, weigh the available reservation and purchase conditions against the rest of your Tokyo itinerary.
